The Afterparty: A Discussion on the Future of Parliamentary Democracy in Canada

About the Event

The Afterparty was a discussion held in September 2013 in Halifax. Springtide invited speakers from across the partisan political spectrum to talk about how hyper-partisanship in Canadian legislatures was impacting democracy and civil dialogue in Canada, and what could be done about it.  The Afterparty was Springtide’s first-ever public event.

Invited speakers were:

– Brent Rathgeber, an independent Member of Parliament who had recently resigned from Stephen Harper’s Conservative caucus over the ‘government’s lack of commitment to transparency.’

– Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party of Canada

– Danny Graham, former leader of the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia

– Graham Steele, former Finance Minister in Darrel Dexter’s NDP government.

The conversation took place in Halifax in the middle of the 2013 provincial election.
